PRAISE FOR WINE IN MY SIPPY CUP

"Fabulously funny and amazingly candid book about a real woman who we all can relate to. I laughed so hard at times and yet I could feel all the love hope and frustrations written so brilliantly in this book."

"This book reminded me a little of Erma Bombeck's books. So real yet so funny. I don't ever remember laughing so hard."

"Dove has a knack for tapping into the inner thoughts of every mother who has struggled with the pull between herself and her children, between work and home, between domesticity and sensuality."

"Beautiful and funny."

A sophisticated, put together career woman prior to having kids, now Liz Cartwright is lucky to go to the bathroom by herself, much less get out of the house wearing matching shoes and a clean shirt. While she is preoccupied with the sometimes mind-numbing responsibilities of motherhood, her husband is becoming increasingly distant and preoccupied with work, giving Liz the distinct impression that she is losing her husband along with her sense of identity. Armed with a book on spicing up her sex life purchased at a sex toy party and the help of her three best girlfriends, Liz embarks on an all-out attempt to rejuvenate her marriage and find personal fulfillment.

However, things in Liz’s life have a tendency to fail with hilarious results, and her attempts to woo her husband are no exceptions. Despite numerous setbacks—a pantiless tennis court seduction gone awry, a stolen vibrator and an unfortunate incident involving a thong—Liz is determined to reclaim her romantic mojo, until a chance encounter with her first love and a hobby that inadvertently turns into a job opportunity make Liz reevaluate what love inside marriage means and the price she is willing to pay to reclaim her sense of self-worth.

I really didn’t know what to expect from this book. It’s not my usual genre—humor? chick-lit?—but I loved the title, so I picked it up. Well, this book is delightful. It’s wonderfully written, funny, and insightful. Anyone who’s ever had to raise, watch, or even deal with children on a daily basis will recognize the heroine’s plight. It will make you laugh, but will also make you recognize a few truths about being a mom and a wife. So, yes, there is wonderful humor in this book, but it's also heart-warming and poignant (I shed a few tears) as Liz reflects, and eventually comes to understand not only what it is to be a wife and mother, but to be a woman and human.

Wine in my Sippy Cup by Deborah Dove
3 stars

Hilarious in places! A slice of her life, warts and all. If you have kids you will relate to some of the funny things that happen wine in the lunch box, hiding in the bathroom just to get a moment of peace. There is the requisite "adult products party" where our narrator, Liz is of course at a loss to what all the excitement is about. Just a few of those formulaic ha ha but ho hum moments then the author gets into the actual meat of her story with an inattentive husband, crazy situation with her father-in-law and an old love resurfacing out of the blue. Once she stopped writing mommy lit with the focus on girlfriends & wine, this book got really interesting. Liz is struggling to be "someone" besides just mom & wife and this book takes us along on her journey. The way the story is wrapped up at the end was a little too pat but satisfying with no loose ends. Still and all for a first book, I enjoyed it and will be looking for more from Deborah Dove. 3 stars.
Liz is a 35 year old mother of three who had a great job but left it to become a stay-at-home mom. Her husband works long hours and barely looks at her any more. She struggles to be the perfect homemaker, wants to lose 10lbs., and wonders who she's become, if she's even herself any more.

I was hesitant to get this book because of the title. I've recently read a couple of books about women/mothers who drank too much and were supposed to be funny. I personally don't find alcoholic mothers entertaining. This book does include drinking but not as much as the title might indicate.

This book isn't a new concept, to be sure. Even some of the jokes are not unique to this genre. But I laughed out loud so many times, read parts to my mother, and wondered along with Liz whether she was going to stay in her marriage or not. The author has a good feel for character development and story line as well as a great sense of humor. Liz is the modern 'everymom.'
I'm not usually a big fan of chick lit but needed to "cleanse my reading palate" from my usual favored mystery genre. I have to say this was quite the gem.

Protagonist Liz Cartwright struggles to find her own identity while raising three young children pretty much single-handedly while her husband works long hours. She has a tight group of female friends that meets regularly for a drink and to discuss life, family, and sex.

The books opens with Liz and her friends at a home party that she was talked into going to in which articles designed to "spice up" one's sex life, are shown and purchased. Liz has been trying to bring back the spark in her own marriage to overworked Scott who barely seems to notice her.

You can't help but laugh when Liz finds herself in more than one compromising situation as she tries to follow her book's suggestions on how to make her marriage sizzle. There is something to be learned from her friend Angie as she shares later on of a recurring dream of hers.

This was a great funny read and I'm looking forward to seeing what else this author has written.
This book is really, really funny. I didn't feel like the writer was trying to force the situation to make it funny, it was natural & pretty true to life--my life, that is. I identified with so much of it. The very first incident was practically identical to one I went through except someone took over a wedding shower I was hosting & turned it into a party practically identical to the one described. I liked how the loose ends were tied up throughout the book. The only thing I found that I was disappointed in was when "Ruthless" presented 3 wrapped packages to her new daughter-in-law & there was no explanation as to what were in them until the next recipient got the same gift (personalized for his family). I also didn't remember any mention about her being a painter. Since I didn't have time to sit down & read the story in 1 or 2 sittings, it might have been something that had been mentioned earlier & I missed or forgot it. Still, I enjoyed the book immensely for a light-hearted read. I can't wait to read more of this writer's work!
Liz Cartwright used to have a great job in marketing that she truly loved. That was until the children started to arrive. Now, the mother of three and the owner of 10 pounds from each of these babies, she is a frazzled stay at home Mom working hard to keep it all together. The wife of a very busy attorney who works long hours, most of the household responsibilities and childcare fall on her shoulders.

Liz has several good friends with children with whom she gets together. They try to have a girls night out every so often and enjoy their chance to laugh and share some wine.

Feeling like she is not getting the support from her husband, Liz purchases a book with ideas on livening up their sex life. In addition, her friends gift her with the Little Blue Bunny vibrator that plays a huge part of getting laughs in this book.

When Liz encounters Charlie, an old flame, he invites her to use her talents in marketing and photography by spending a weekend in California attending the opening of a new home development. Feeling ignored by her husband, will Liz let her old attraction to Charlie lead her to do something she will regret?

The antics of Liz, her friends, kids and family members will keep you laughing throughout this book. However, there are some very serious and poignant aspects of the story that will also make you want to grab a tissue.
